| Cell C Awards Exponªnt Contracts worth in Excess of R 20-Million |
| |
| JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, 26 November 2001 - Cell C, South Africa's third and newest cellular network operator, has awarded Exponªnt (previously Brainware Consulting) with contracts which collectively are valued in excess of R20 million, according to Leon Truter, Operations Director for Exponªnt. |
| |
The entry point for Exponªnt as a system integration company to Cell C, was their successful bid for a POS solution, according to Truter. He explains, "Cell C required an integrated POS solution that caters for the complex serial number control of the cellular industry across their head office, showrooms and franchises." |
| |
Exponent recommended the highly scalable ActiveRetail POS software running on DigiDos hardware.
ActiveRetail, a new-generation, fully integrated, e-Retail ready, enterprise resource management suite of products based on the Microsoft Distributed iNternet-based Architecture (DNA), was implemented in 24 Cell C franchise stores and one showroom in a national rapid deployment project. Truter states, "The application's focus is inventory, cash and serial n umber tracking in the Cell C environment. It offers full store management capabilities including Sales, Purchases, Merchandise Management, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Cashbook and General Ledger Modules and is fully workflow enabled." |
| |
| Exponªnt was responsible for the architecture of the business rules, the configuration of the Cell C POS solution, the installation, rollout, and implementation of the system and the training of the users. |
| |
Truter says that one of the challenges within the project was integrating the multiple specialized skills required to ensure that Exponªnt could complete the implementation and training within two weeks of winning the contract. He adds, "The rollout and enabling of the 24 franchises all over South Africa on Friday the 16th of November 2001, also comprised its own unique challenges." |
| |
The second project successfully completed by Exponªnt for Cell C was the implementation of a scanning solution for stock take. Truter explains, "The scope of this requirement was fairly small to start with, but it changed and grew rapidly as Cell C's launch date approached." |
According to Truter, Exponªnt utilised PiGo technology toolsets to rapidly develop and implement a pervasive scanning solution for Cell C's serialized stock issue and receiving. He says, "The application has been implemented on a radio frequency-enabled Symbol pocket PC device (PDA). The PDA is equipped with an integrated bar-code scanner and is used to issue and receive stock in real-time via communication with a PiGo database application in the Cell C store. This solution enabled Cell C to receive and issue more than one million line items in only three days."

Other areas that Exponªnt were involved in were the development of the integration software between POS, the scanning solution, the asset management system and Cell C's Oracle enterprise resource planning software. The company also bid for the providing of intranet and asset management solutions to Cell C in the short-term. In addition, Exponªnt supplies Cell C with consultants in various skills categories such as Network Architects, System Engineers, and User Support personnel. Truter concludes, "We were caught up in the hype of the Cell C launch which helped us perform on an unheard of high and we've loved every bit of it." |
