New Age Technology

Exponªnt accepts that the business models for the next decade are radically different and require different IT skills to service the industry appropriately.

We therefore launched an initiative, New Age Technologies, to cross-train and enable our consultant's base towards the demands of the industry at large over the next decade. The objectives of NAT, in short, are to draw on the experience and depth of our consultant base, combined with appropriate training and support, to service our client base according to the demands of the new technological revolution to the same standards as before.

JAVA, C++, OO, CORBA, COM, JASMIN, LINUX and related technologies have become mission critical in the IT world and skills supply lags the huge demand by far. We counter this by massive investment, guidance and support of our people.

We also foresee a drastic change in the work environment of the New Millennium. This is due largely to the shortage of skills worldwide, economic factors, and availability of excellent technology to counter the skills shortage. Virtual workplaces are implemented as a viable alternative and on the same technical backbone, off-site and offshore development and support.

Typical solutions and services include:

  • Distributed multi-tier architecture applications featuring technologies such as Object Request Broker (CORBA), COM and ASP

  • Card and e-Commerce enablement and bureau services

  • Integration of legacy environments with electronic commerce solutions using products such as CA's Jasmin

  • Web enabled application development (legacy, client/server, object engineering and web-based)

  • Web based merchant and e-Commerce portal enablement

  • Add on skills, specifically geared towards web environments such as JAVA, HTML, Secure transaction protocols, Linux and Unix

    Asset Monitoring

Managing assets in the company supply chain is a critical competency. Businesses are dependent on the performance of their assets and their effective and efficient utilization. A real-time location system provides the best way to locate, track and monitor assets in the supply chain and provides full visibility of the supply chain itself.

Exponªnt offers a fully integrated Real-time Location System (RTLS), tailored to meet the client's requirements and providing real-time visibility of assets. The RTLS offers breakthrough wireless location and tracking technology that gives managers their first real-time view of asset movement and utilization within their businesses.

RTLS uses inexpensive radio frequency tags - attached in various ways to the assets - that transmit via radio frequency their coded identification number and status on a regular basis. A network of small RF transceiver units that are placed throughout a facility or plant receives these transmissions and decodes the information. Three or more transceiver units receive the signals and triangulates the exact position of the asset. The information is stored in a database and can be presented through graphical user interfaces in a 2-D or 3-D geographical format.

It is possible to determine the location of the asset and in some cases even if the asset is in use or not. The RF tags provide tamper alarms if they are tampered with and the system will provide an alarm if the tag disappears from the monitoring system, together with its last known location. Historical tag movement and alarm logs are maintained. The information collected in the database can be integrated into other IT systems such as ERP, SCADA, Warehouse Management Systems, Financial Systems, HR Systems, GIS and many other Management Information Systems.

Potential uses of the RTLS System have been identified and through our partnership with Sovereign Tracking Systems in the USA, Exponªnt can provide the complete solution including integration with other systems,

  • Medical equipment monitoring - in a hospital environment, many critical portable instruments and equipment may not be in the desired location when required. Knowing exactly where they are and whether they are in use or not is a critical requirement. Tracking these assets currently remains a manual task in most facilities. Expensive equipment, such as infusion pumps, defibrillators, dialysis and heart-lung machines must be calibrated regularly and preventative maintenance must be scheduled based on the hourly utilization of these machines. The RTLS System provides the necessary identification and location information, together with utilization information, which can be used by Maintenance Systems for scheduling.

  • Catering trolleys for airlines - catering trolleys are one of the most difficult assets to track, due to the geographical movement of the aircraft and the logistics of managing the numbers in the various locations operated by the airlines. The RTLS tracking system, specifically installed at each location, can provide the exact information on the location of each trolley in a single database, providing the manager with information for logistics management.

  • Shipping Containers - shipping containers being unloaded at a port, stored on site, moved to other depots geographically distant, provide a perfect use for the RTLS tracking system. Expensive assets can be tracked within a port environment by sensible positioning of the RF readers around the facility. Within the container depot, location and identification of containers is an important part of the management of these expensive assets in terms of labour productivity.

  • Airside ground equipment - in an airline operation, many suppliers of services on the airside need to be fully informed of location and status of equipment such as aircraft tugs, buses, baggage vehicles, cleaning trucks, catering vehicles etc. Utilizing the RTLS system provides the opportunity for an operations controller to be not only informed of where the equipment is located at any point in time, but also allows for timeous decision-making when required to despatch equipment for a late flight departure or an early arrival. The tracking system thus enhances the airline performance and the performance of its service providers.

Exponªnt provides the full set of skills for the RTLS System solution, including

    - project management
    - RF site testing
    - Tag design and packaging
    - Software installation
    - Installation of networks & servers
    - Post-installation support
